Abstract
A research purposed to evaluate the effect of planting season and gene action controlled tuber yield and its protein content performance on sweetpotato was carried out at Jatikerto Field Station of Brawijaya University at about 300 m asl. on the soil classified alfisol. Six sweetpotato population resulted from crossing of two male parents with three female parents were planted in two sesons ie. rainy season (November 2004- March 2005) and dry season (May-September 2005). The result showed that fresh tuber weight per plant is significant influenced by season, where the yield in dry season is higher than in rainy season. In the other hand, planting season did not affected dry matter (%) and protein content of tuber. Performance of tuber yield and its dry matter and protein content were controlled by additive genes, so improvement of these characters by mass selection or phenotypic recurrent select-ion is very appropriate. Using mass selection method with 20% selection intensity, genetic gain of tuber yield/plant, dry matter and protein content of tuber were 1.60 kg, 5.52% and 2.08%, respectively.
