Abstract
Herbal medicine has been traditionality administrated to ruminants thoghout east java. It is generally believed that administration of such a medicine would improve feed intake and general condition of animal health. Nevertheless, there is pancity in the literature dealing with mechanism, by which the herbal medicine influence apetite and health. This preliminary study aimed at evaluating the effect of herbal medicine (produced by P.T. Air Mancur) administration towards diurnal variation of rumen protozoa and an-aerobic sporangia population, and its subsequence influence on feed digestibility. Six rams weighing om average 9.82 kg BB0.75 (approximately 10 month old) were panned individually in the wooden-slatted cage. Each animal was equipped with a rumen cannula. In the first period all animal were fed with a diet consisted of Cynodon plectostachyus, Brachiaria decumbens and Panicum maximum c.v. Petrie hay (DM to 2,5% BW), plus commercial concentrate (30 g/kg BW0,75). Following the cessation of period I, the animals were administered 2,82 g/kg BW0,75 from the recommended dose of herbal medicine per day for 20 concecutive days wherw all parameters measured in period I were repeated. The results showed that herbal medicine tended to reduce rumen protozoa and concomitantly increased the number of fungal sporangia invaded the leaf blade Cynodon plectostachyus. This increase is believed to be responsible for 6% increament in feed digestibility.
