Abstract

Selection of parent material and mating designs determine the success of conventional breeding programs. Conventional plant breeding is widely used in micronutrient biofortification program. This study aims to evaluate three families of polycross and controlled crosses from 11 cultivars of sweetpotato. BIS OP-61 is one of 11 cultivars that is compatible with 10 high yielding cultivars. The three families include the BIS OP-61OP family (the polycross method), BIS OP-61-♀ (the controlled crosses as a female parent) and BIS OP-61-♂ (the controlled crosses as male parent); each family consists of 40 genotypes, 77 genotypes and 35 genotypes. Each family is used as a test cultivar evaluated together with control cultivars in an Augmented Randomized Block Design planted into three blocks. The BIS OP-61-OP family is placed in block I, the family of BIS OP-61-♀ is placed on block II, and the BIS OP-61 family is placed in block III. Within each block is also planted with control cultivars, ie BIS OP-61. The all were planted within row spacing 1 m. The parameters observed were storage root number, storage root weight, and storage root yield estimation, foliage weight per plant and Fe and Zn content. The results showed that recombination method between high yield potential and micronutrient content with polycross or controlled crosses evaluated in different blocks are differences in all parameters. The phenotypic variance of all parameters in the polycross family is wider than the controlled crosses. BIS OP-61 is capable of producing a wider phenotype variance when used in polycross crosses than controlled crosses.
